Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic Dermatitis

When your skin starts flaking or feeling persistently irritated, it can be both confusing and frustrating. Seborrheic dermatitis isn't just dandruff. It's an inflammatory skin condition that tends to show up in oil-rich areas of the body. For Black women, it may appear as flaky patches, itchiness, or skin that feels tender—often on the scalp, along the hairline, around the nose, in the eyebrows, or behind the ears. On melanin-rich skin, redness isn't always obvious, so irritation may be felt more than seen.

This condition can flare and fade over time, especially when the skin's balance is thrown off. It's linked to oil production and the skin's reaction to a natural yeast that lives on all of us. Stress, weather shifts, and product buildup can all play a role.

Understanding how seborrheic dermatitis shows up on deeper skin tones gives us clarity and confidence. The more we recognize its patterns, the better we can respond with care and intention.
